Q&A

Which side is better - US or Canadian side of Niagara Falls?

Canadian side, no question. The view from the Canadian side is dramatically better because you’re looking directly at the American Falls and the full sweep of Horseshoe Falls, while the US side mostly gives you a sideways view of the mist. You also get the entire tourist strip on Clifton Hill with all the neon, casinos, and chain restaurants, plus the Niagara Parkway for a nicer walk along the gorge. The US side has a park-like feel and the Cave of the Winds (which gets you soaked right at the base of Bridal Veil Falls, $24 USD), but it’s more industrial and run-down overall.

That said, the US side is worth a quick trip for the Maid of the Mist boat ride (same price as Canada’s Hornblower, about $28 USD) and the view from Goat Island, especially at night when they light up the falls. But honestly, unless you’re already in New York or want the t-shirt from the US side, just stay in Canada. If you’re driving, you’ll need a passport or enhanced ID to cross the Rainbow Bridge, and parking on the Canadian side is a pain (expect $20-40 CAD for a lot). Bottom line: Canada for the view, US for the boat ride, but don’t waste a full day on the US side.
