Post-Labor Day is the secret. The park empties dramatically after the first weekend of September. You can show up mid-morning and find parking easily. You can walk up to Cave of the Winds without a wait. It's a completely different experience than August.
Early fall color in the gorge. The Niagara Gorge Trail on the NY side picks up early fall color by late September. The combination of gorge geology, river views, and turning vegetation makes for some of the best hiking of the year.
Hotel prices drop 25–35%. If a Fallsview room in Canada was out of your summer budget, September is when it becomes achievable. Mid-range hotels that were $350+ in August can drop to $200–250.
September weather is genuinely excellent. Daytime highs in the upper 60s to low 70s, lower humidity than summer, and still enough daylight for full days of exploring. Bring a layer for evenings.
