Q&A

What should I wear to Niagara Falls?

Just wear layers, period. The mist from the falls is no joke, especially on the Maid of the Mist boat or behind the falls. A light rain jacket or poncho is essential—they give you a cheap plastic one on the boat, but it rips easy. In summer, shorts and a t-shirt are fine, but bring a hoodie or windbreaker for the evening breeze. In winter, it’s brutal cold and icy, so pack a heavy parka, boots with grip, and gloves. The wind tunnel effect near the falls makes it feel 10 degrees colder.

For footwear, wear something with traction. The walkways get slippery, especially on the American side and around the Cave of the Winds boardwalk. No flip-flops or heels unless you want to wipe out. If you’re doing the Journey Behind the Falls, you’ll get wet, so quick-dry pants are smarter than jeans. Honestly, skip the “fashion” and go for comfort—you’re here for the view, not a photoshoot. And yes, you will get wet. Bring a dry bag for your phone.
