The single biggest decision of your Niagara Falls trip isn't which boat tour to take — it's which side of the border to sleep on. This one choice determines your view, your morning walk, your restaurant options, and how your whole day gets organized.
US side: Quieter at night, closer to the American Falls, generally less expensive, easier parking. The state park is walkable. The casinos are there if you want them. The area outside the tourist zone is a real city with real restaurants and grocery stores.
Canadian side: Better falls views (Horseshoe Falls faces Ontario), more hotels with actual fallsview rooms, more restaurants, the Clifton Hill entertainment strip, and Niagara-on-the-Lake 20 minutes up the road. Also louder, more crowded, and more expensive in July and August.
Either side works. The right answer depends on your priorities.

Price guide: $ = under $100/night · $$ = $100–180 · $$$ = $180–300 · $$$$ = $300+. Rates vary significantly by season and advance booking. Summer weekends command a 30–50% premium on Canadian-side fallsview hotels.
What no one tells you about booking Niagara Falls hotels
- "Fallsview" doesn't mean the same thing everywhere. Some fallsview rooms see the falls clearly. Others see a parking garage with a sliver of mist. Ask specifically before booking, or pay for a guaranteed falls-facing room category.
- Book Canadian side hotels far in advance for summer. July and August weekend availability evaporates — and the prices that remain are punishing.
- US side hotels are walkable to the state park. Many visitors book the Canadian side and then cross the Rainbow Bridge on foot daily. Both directions work.
- Weekend vs. weekday pricing: The difference on the Canadian side is dramatic. A Sunday check-in can save 40% over a Friday on the same room.
