Q&A

Should I visit Niagara Falls in December?

Yes, but only if you're okay with freezing temps and accept that most outdoor attractions shut down. December is dead quiet and the falls themselves are stunning—half frozen, mist turning to ice, and way less crowds. But the boat rides (Maid of the Mist) end in November, and the Cave of the Winds boardwalk closes by late October. You're mostly looking at the view from the railings, the Illumination at night (still on), and maybe Journey Behind the Falls if it's not too icy. Bring thermal layers, waterproof boots, and gloves you don't mind getting wet.

The upside: hotel prices drop hard. You can grab a room at the Marriott Fallsview for around $150 CAD a night instead of $400 in summer. The Niagara Parks Winter Festival of Lights runs through January, and it's free—just drive or walk the 8 km route. If you want to do the casinos, indoor waterparks, or the Skylon Tower observation deck, those are open. But if your ideal trip is hiking the gorge or getting soaked on the Hornblower boat, don't bother—wait for May or later.
